Club History
The UWA Judo Club was established in 1988 under the UWA Martial Arts Club. In 2008 , UWA Judo became a separate club catering for students and the community interested in the Olympic Sport of Judo and other grappling and submission sports. In the 1990s the club was very strong, with teams competing all over Asia, and students participating in exchange training with Judo clubs in Japan. After a quiet period, the UWA Judo club has been revitalized in 2007, with the new board aiming to bring the club back to prominence. UWA Judo Club is very fortunate to have the largest permanently laid tatami mat in Western Australia.
The club has 2 international teams from China and Japan visiting/training at the club over 2008, as part of the club's international exchange program. In 2007, the club hosted International coaches Sven Loll, Germany Olympic Silver medalist (Seoul) and Wakayama Sensei from the All Japan University Judo Federation and a University Judo team from South Africa, under coach Coen Van Tonder.
The club has been developing the UWA Junior and Youth Judo Club over the last few years; with some 50 local children practicing up to 4 hours a week.
